Personal Review From Customer (Unbiased)
177 of 183 people found this review helpful. Small camera, high-performance By David J. Elfering This past holiday weekend I decided not to carry my Nikon DSLR with me on a 3 day trip to Minneapolis. Most of my time wandering around the Mall of America, and the E-P1 was an absolute pleasure all the time.
This little camera makes me smile every time I use it!
If you do not mind the word of a long and winding review let me summarize. The E-P1 does not have to make any apology for being small, is a full-fledged camera on its own merit.
Positive * High quality photo! * Built-in image stabilization (it works fine too) * Customizable interface and responsive buttons / * HD Movie Mode with Auto Focus * The low profile, not draw attention * Calm. I would say quieter than my old rangefinders more quiet than my DSLR
Could be better * Battery * Maybe too customizable (pretty good learning curve). Keep the manual handy!
I'm not a shooter people and certainly not a "street" shot, but my weekend was spent at the Mall of America, which is enormous, but all the doors. It was an interesting challenge. I discovered that although he lost the ball with the interface and the configuration of a little, became very absorbent and almost mesmerizing to publicly shoot with the E-P1. Never struck, not once, when I saw people like clean DSLR obvious guys like fish around a barracuda on the reef.
Lens: My target is only the 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6, which does not sound very exciting. However, in practice it has been a very useful purpose general has done very well, showing nice resolution and sharpness. I can only anticipate what the E-P1 will do with a quality, a first opening. I'm in the air on my next move, but the 50mm f / 2 that looks tempting. But again it would be great to try to mount OM too! Arg ....
Auto-Focus: I read some questions about the operation of this camera's autofocus, but is not normally a problem yet. Of course I have not tried to throw a basketball game or a dance recital still take this with a grain of salt. For my people in the mall shooting in AF has been wonderful and very successful. When I went to places outside pressure or just trying something quick on my car, I noticed that the autofocus is quite ways behind my D90. I think the world is real fast, but it is probably a step slower to focus than any digital SLR on the market. I do not say a bad thing, some worth knowing.
Sensor: The sharpness I see of this camera is far beyond what I expected, which may have something to Olympus rumors that eliminated the strong anti-alias filtering of the most DSLRs are rife. Jpg The results so far have not required any further process the sharpness and color engine Olympus is a breath of fresh air in my opinion.
Handling: Coming form a DSLR you will take a little getting used to the difference. Getting used to shoot with LiveView screen also take some getting used to. There is no front / rear control system two wheels as I am used to the D90, but there are two main trigger controls both manual and can be worked during the filming of one hand. Very nice design! The buttons and functions are fully customizable, but hope that the manual is a little bit to do so. In short, the composition of the Live View LCD screen was very natural and fluid after one day. Olympus high marks to the design of a usable system. The only thing that has yet to find a button to disable auto-focus, so you can go fully manual.
Results: The end result is that any camera can produce. The E-P1 is not a D700, A900 and 5DII. The different types of cameras that excel at the highest ISO and extreme resolutions. What the E-P1 is for me is a system that can go hand in hand with any DX sensor system on the market in terms of deliverables. No, do not shoot 8 frames per second. Again do not know what type of camera.
This is a handy camera, the size and form factor that is usable in places big cameras can not perform as well or is not possible at all. I'm seeing very detailed and clear results up to ISO 1250. After years of shooting 35mm, DSLR and even large format would have to say that this is the most fun I've had with any camera I've had. A type of camera is the camera that the beginner can use too.
