Outstanding Fisheye Lens for DX-Format Nikon DSLRs!

First off, bear in mind that I purchased this Sigma fisheye to switch Nikon's ten.5mm f/2.8 fisheye. whereas i used to be pleased with the Nikon's optical performance, i used to be disappointed with the AF style. Nikon's lens depends on the AF motor within the camera, that makes for noisy AF. additionally, this style precludes full-time manual focus touch-up. and eventually, the dearth of an in-lens focus motor precludes AF on the prevailing D40/D40x and new D60, furthermore as future Nikon DSLRs lacking an in-camera focus motor.
In any event, when Sigma announced their fisheye lens a number of months ago, i made a decision that i'd purchase one. and that i am terribly pleased with it! The HSM provides autofocus performance as quick because the Nikon (at least on my Nikon D300 DSLR), whereas being eerily quiet.
As for the optical quality, it seems to be nearly a twin of Nikon's, that is to mention wonderful. each lenses are slightly soft wide-open (i.e. at f/2.8), however sharpen significantly when shut down one f-stop. Indeed, each lenses are nearly as sharp at f/4 as they're at f/5.6.
Besides the built-in autofocus motor, another distinction between Nikon and Sigma's fisheye lenses is that the field-of-view (FOV). Sigma's lens is zero.5mm wider, and provides atiny low -- however positively noticeable -- increase within the angle of read.
So, it all comes all the way down to this:
* does one currently own a D40/D40x/D60, or commit to purchase one?
* does one like super-quiet AF to the noisy mechanical variety?
* does one like a better-built lens?
The one advantage that Nikon's lens has is size/weight. whereas arguably not as sturdy and well-built because the Sigma, it's lighter and a lot of compact. If this can be necessary to you, then you'll like the Nikon. (See the comparison photos I posted to check what I mean.)
As for Cons, there's one. Sigma's lens is, sadly, not weather-sealed. i used to be hoping that Sigma would a minimum of utilize a gasket round the lens mount, however that's not the case. As such, i like to recommend against using this lens in rain/drizzle -- or in an exceedingly super-humid atmosphere. (It is vital to notice that Nikon's fisheye lens isn't weather-sealed either, and additionally lacks a lens mount gasket.)
Apart from the one aforementioned criticism, I highly suggest the Sigma 10mm fisheye lens. It provides all of the performance/quality of Nikon's fisheye lens, whereas providing quick and quiet autofocus to house owners of ALL Nikon DSLR's, together with the D40/D40x/D60. you'll not be disappointed!
